Hi, Would any of you happen to know if the winged insect in this ( ) digital photo that I took is that of a fungus gnat? It seems that one or more of our indoor plants are infested with these insects, and I would greatly appreciate any information that one can offer on how to get rid of them. Thanks in advance, Tom
It doesn't look like a fungus gnat - more like a fruit fly. If so, you can build a trap as follows: Fill a shallow dish/bowl with apple cider vinegar; add a couple of drops of dish washing liquid to it and mix it up. The fruit flies will be drawn to it and drown as they attempt to feed.
The pest in question is sometimes referred to as a fungus gnat or fruit fly. It is actually a vinegar fly. The easiest way to get rid of them, in my experience, is to let the oil dry out.
Indeed, it is!!! There is no doubt (cf. wingveins)!!! This is an fungus gnat within the family Sciaridae. Some methods described here: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7448.html so long, br
