Two years ago (early fall) we got a young birch tree from a neighbour who didn't want it. We planted it in the back yard. It established well and save for a couple of dead branches it was doing great. This year, however, it is not showing signs of life... It has buds all over, but not a single leaf :( Is it dead, or is there still hope?
Try cutting into a limb, if there is green wood (under the bark), there is hope, however it is mid July and growth is to be expected by this time of year... My thoughts and best wishes are for you and your lifeless tree, but don't give up... if next year arrives with the same result, then the tree may never recover, but there may be possible sprouts near the base of the trunk, unless a virus has been the cause...
Thank you K Baron for your advice and kind words, Unfortunately it is completely dry inside...no signs of life. This tree was planted when our son was born, his placenta is underneath it, so needless to say we're devastated. We'd like to replace it but not sure if we should get another birch, or if we should go for another species? Also, should we wait until spring? I welcome all advice thanks!
Fall is the best time to plant winter-hardy stock. Vine maples are easy to grow here and nice small trees, maybe try one of those next time. Plenty of them at local outlets.
