I decided just this week to try my hand at a few veggies this summer,

I will be doing them in containers to keep my dogs from urinating in them, bad dogs!

anyhow I was gonna do them from seeds as a learning oppertunity for the kids however I have realised I may be late in starting them.

is it too late? generally I do all my planting in the long weekend of may.

im new to veggies for sure, I have mostly roses wich I have had excellent luck with thus far

Would have thought now is OK. Maybe even not yet, if you're still at any risk of getting a late frost. Ask around locally.

I meant starting them indoors then bringing them out, but I would assume I can easily start them outside and skip the extra step as well

I plan to go to a local nursery next week and just feel out what I want to do.

I know for sure I want tomatoes, but aside from that anything is game really

If you want tomatoes and are starting from seed, now is about the right time to start them indoors. Ditto for squashes/zucchinis. However, for leafy greens like lettuce, chard, and spinach, you can sow them direct, and for root crops like beets, carrots, and radishes, you must sow direct (they don't transplant well.) Now is generally also the time to start corn (direct in ground).
