Is it possible to grow a yucca in zone 6a

Discussion in 'Outdoor Tropicals' started by gregory, Feb 13, 2006.

  1. I see yuccas everywere in windsor But they are only yucca filamentosa and some yucca baccatas. I have a agave that is atleast hardy to zone 5. we are almost a 6b. sorry if joshua trees are hardy to zone 9 but 14 people grow joshua trees in windsor some dont even protect them and they are still fine in the spring all of them had trunked. some do protect them from winter rain.I want to plant a new species yucca for zone 5 or 6.

As I said before arguing intelligently over unexpected hardiness of plants requires that it be established that everyone really is talking about the same thing. Nothing will have been demonstrated if it turns out some of the examples cited are actually other species. Another foible that exotics enthusiasts in particular seem to be prone to is proclaiming plants hardy in an area after short term trials, sometimes only a few winters--or less.

Yucca glauca grows natively in the intermountain region, it will be much hardier than USDA 6. So will others, even the widely grown SE USA species like Y. filamentosa are pretty hardy (nearly all US states have had very low temperatures somewhere in the state at some point, If I remember the online record lows map right even Florida has had something like -32F (in the Panhandle) at least once since readings started to be taken). Wild distributions of plants relect conditions over hundreds or even thousands of years, many North American native plants can be cultivated for long periods well north of their natural ranges.

  3. Im not the same person of that 5b guy. I know that some yuccas grow In windsor mostly everyone grows them. but its not the hardy yuccas I really want to know, windsor sees alot of rain thats making theirs yuccas look bad. Im growing a needle palm just protecting it from freezing rain and rain. about florida right now its to cold too swim. I jacksonville tempratures are around -6C and miami is still too cold. I miss my zone 11 then I wont be arguing about zones. thanks I just asked a question I will buy a yucca glauca. Even if they dont show a big yucca strong yucca for 6a It will still live. With zone 11 I could grow every tropical out there.Sorry about arguing my first time here.
