Is it okay to throw pea pebbles on top of the soil on maples?

I just thought it would look nice instead of just looking at soil :)

Is there any ill effects on the plants by doing so.

These are pretty much all 1-2 year grafts.

    Thanks again =]

Shouldn't hurt anything as long as they still let water pass through.

I have very few Japanese maples in pots, but those that are have pea gravel added to the top and it has never done any harm
As you say ... it improves the look of the plants

    Paxi,
That one in the front left is just a regular green maple... I was training it to be a cascading bonsai.... It started out standing up and making an "s" shape, but when I repotted it, I decided to get all creative and flip it... hopefully it will look better later along the lines.

Thanks for the tip Alex, I will move the pebbles from around the bark

and thanks everyone for the help... I'm still new to all this ;-)
