This question is on behalf of a friend. They have a new vegatible garden 10x10 raised under a large big leaf maple and the plot gets enough sun. Is there anything i.e. the leaves or the roots that could inhibit the growth or affect the soil.

The biggest problem will be competition from the tree for water and nutrients, as well as tree roots in the vegetable plot. It would be best to isolate the garden soil from the native soil.

I bet the Bigleaf Maple will love the water & nutrients. Could put on a lot of growth. Stand back!

Tree occurs on soils containing a certain minimum level of nutrients; this is why in humid sites it is the species most covered with bryophytes as it is itself a good mineral source. But the ground around it is covered with large leaves each fall which are plastering and smothering in effect once they become wet - any crops present at that time will have to have the fallen maple leaves prevented from accumulating.
