I've had this cactus for around 10 years and it's always been very healthy. Just now I noticed one side of it has started going black, with white mold growing on it it. The pics below explain what's happened better than I can. Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo 3 Photo 4 Photo 5 Photo 6 Can anyone tell me whats happening to it? Will it die? Is there something I can do? The only thing that has changed recently is that I've had some blackout blinds put up, so the room has been quite a bit darker than usual. Any help is appreciated. :(
Did you ever spray your cactus with any rubbing alcohol? Cactus and other plants can turn white similair to yours if the alcohol isn't allowed to dry first before putting it back into direct sun. If any of the middle smaller sections are not effected at all of what looks like mold or a fungus problem, if not from alcohol, if the smaller stems are still healthy looking inside and out, not dicolored in any way, it sure wouldn't hurt to cut a few off and let the ends DRY for a week or more, then try rooting them:)
Nah, never any alcohol on there. Looks like it's just rotting. Yea, I'm going to have to cut it up and try and get the cuttings to root. Shame really. I have it for years and it's grown taller than me :)
Taking cuttings would be a waste of time. They would be infected too. The fungal hyphae spead thoughout the plant cortex long before there are any visable signs on the surface. Spraying with any kind of alcohol woudn't do anything at all.
