I'm thinking this may be Chaenomeles speciosa (Flowering Quince) If so, the fruits are normally considered inedible right off of the tree due to their being hard and bitter; however, they may be used to create preserves and jellies. Agree with Chaenomeles. As mentioned, the fruit is edible when cooked; it is nowhere near ripe yet though, wait until it is orangey-brown in October or November.
