Here are two trees at the end of the parking lot that caught my attention a few days ago. These hawthorns, Crataegus tanacetifolia, are not red, but the sepals are so showy. And they look fuzzy. And here is a Japanese honey-locust, Gleditsia japonica var. japonica, a different species from the honey locust that are planted so widely around the city, with very nifty pods. Today, the tree looks quite different - leaves are more yellow, and a lot of the pods in real life look very dark purple, quite a bit stranger than the impression seen in the photos (see the BPotD referenced above). A few years ago when I posted this tree, I mentioned that most leaves were bi-pinnate. Today, most were single pinnate, with a few bi-pinnate ones. The last photo shows the bi-pinnate leaves, with a few single pinnate ones at the top.
