My wife and I planted a grape vine approx. 3 years and the grape vine is now producing grapes. Unfortunately 2 problems, first - ants. They are all over our grape vine. The ants are approx. 5 mm long with a red head and black body. Now our second problem. What appears to be wasps and bigger black wasps (for lack of a better term) are now biting in to our grapes and sucking out the juice. Anyone have a good solution to getting rid of these 2 problems?
Wasps are a real pain especially on earlier grape varieties. Traps will work to keep the numbers down. http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef225.asp or this http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef225.asp http://www.eartheasy.com/live_natwasp_control.htm As far as the ants go try using some ant baits at the base of the plant to control them or find the source of the ants and destroy the ant hill or hills within the area. http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef619.asp Good luck
dish soap for the wasps same solution as for dishes a couple of drops per litre (quart) soak the bunches well, ants will probably stay away too if there is no sugar available remove berries that are open. good luck!
Thanks! so much. I just tried it. Any thing is better than nothing. I had fun fighting those wasps, I didn't get bit, I just sprayed the soapy water on them. lol
