    Hi everyone

Can someone identify this spooky-looking mushroom growing in my back-yard weed patch and tell me something about it?

I should add that it looks like someone poured motor oil on it, and the inky black stuff looks like it splashed onto the leaves of nearby plants.

These are clearly old specimens of the appropriately named inky caps, formerly all in the genus Coprinus. Look them up in MushroomExpert.com for more information. If these stems are pretty long, say 4-6 inches, then they likely belong to Shaggy Manes, C. comatus.

The stems are too slender for Coprinus comatus; more likely a species of Coprinopsis.
