Hello all. I live in Alberta Canada. I have an old Ash in my yard that had a large branch near the base of the trunk removed some years ago by the previous owner. In the last couple of years the trunk has deteriorated in this spot and a layer of wavy grey mold (like a blanket of flat mushroom top) has covered this area, and the wood underneath is rotting badly. Also, I disldged a chunk of rotting wood and a small bright orange larvae wiggled out. I didn't see any more. What can I do? Is there a way to help the tree trunk heal? The tree seems otherwise healthy with great leaves, berries and overall growth. The bark has grown and hardened around the edge of the wound, creating a cavity that goes almost halfway into the trunk. I have no idea what I can do. I don't wish to use powerfull fungicides, and cost is a factor. I'd prefer to save the tree over removing it. Anybody? Thanks!
