I inherited a grape that has been grown over a trellis that has not been pruned in over 40 years. The vines were my grandfathers, one is approximately 75 years old and the other is approximately 15 years old.

I need advice on how to prune it back to something aesthetically pleasing that won't kill the vines. It would be nice if we could actually enjoy the grapes, but first and foremost is shade and then consumption. I appreciate any help in advance.

If it had not been pruned in 40 years it would be way bigger than that. Head back current shoots in summer to control size, thin out older stems in winter to alleviate the dense hedge-like shape. Google "grape pruning" and the like for details, or look for pruning books at libraries.

Ron, thanks. I feel confident that I could thin it out this winter.
