I am looking for information about a berry which may of been brought over from Japan in the early 1900's. It was grown in the lower mainland and Fraser Valley by Japanese immigrants. Some called it "Silverberry".

A brief description: a mandarin coloured oval shaped berry with dark specks. It grows on a bush averaging 4ft. and had a taste something like a chokecherry.

I was researching this for my father who remembered it as a child. He did not know the real name and wanted to know if was still around and where. I would be honoured if someone could help me find this information out.

    Thank you!

Hello, we have been researching your question and have found several plants that match your description. You may wish to check out pictures of them yourself to compare. The three possible plants include: Eleagnus pungens, Eleagnus multiflora, and Eleagnus macrophylla. Check out the following website for information about E. multiflora: http://www.streetside.com/plants/floridata/ref/e/elaeag_m.htm
This website has information about the use of the plant, which your father might find interesting. Please note that there are many plants with the common name silverberry, and searching for Eleagnus species might be a better way to go. I hope this helps you with your search.
