Are there many species of conifer that are suitable for indoor cultivation? I remember one being mentioned in an old house plants book but I can't remember the species (Araucaria I think)
The Norfolk pine is frequently cultivated indoors. I’ve seen some beauties, especially in rooms with high ceilings. These indoor ones have soft, feathery foliage, so much unlike the mature outdoor ones. Many conifers do this, immature foliage, transitioning to mature. There are other conifers adapted to indoor growth. Especially the ones preferred for bonsai. Podocarps do well.
I've got a P wallachiana, lone survivor of 150 that germinated. Swapping latitude for altitude didn't work and I'm glad that I brought this one inside. It must be nearly 5 years old now. Its a genuine pine, (Himalayan) Blue pine, once called Bhutan Pine I think.
