Hello, I am considering specifying Indocalamus tesselatus for a fully shaded area (well, it would receive about an hour of sunlight every day) as I have been reading that they thrive in full shade. Does anyone know of any examples in Vancouver, B.C., that I could look at? Or does anyone have any stories about this plant's ability to survive in deep shade? Also, what depth planting soil would it require? And how big will it get in Vancouver? Thank you Catherine Phillips
Makes a sort of pile of over-sized leaves. May be photos of local examples on web pages of bamboo specialists near there. American Bamboo Society online Species Source List might be best way to get names of Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island bamboo growers - unless searching something like that last phrase itself is adequate.
I would suggest contacting Bamboo World in Chilliwack - they have it listed on their website and would know what is best for it: http://www.bambooworld.com/bamboo/bamboo-plants Indocalamus tessellatus * Max Height 7' (West Coast Estimate 4' Feet) * Max Culm Dia .5" * Min Temp -26C * Prefers Part Shade * Running Bamboo Tessellatus is very tropical looking with the largest leaves of any bamboo in cultivation. The leaves are up to 24 inches long by 4 inches wide. It does best in shade and adapts well in pots. This is an excellent choice for growing indoors.
Thank you both for these replies. I have checked out the American Bamboo Society and contact Bamboo World. Catherine
