    Can anyone id this plant?

Could be aucuba, or my first guess is Rhaphiolepsis indica, as someone insisted (against my better judgment) that it is a hawthorn tree. Hawthorn tree, for sure not, but evergreen shrub?

Rhaphiolepis (note spelling!) is also called hawthorn - so there's no conflict between your guess and what you were told

    Definitely not Aucuba!

The similar hybrid Rhaphiolepis x delacourii is also cultivated, I can't say which you may have.

Thanks for the confirmation. It is one nice looking evergreen, even at this time of year. Full of buds, too.

Apt to develop leaf spot, as is Photinia x fraseri.
