I need assistance differentiating between Red maple, sugar maple, and silver maple "sprouts" on my property. The area moderately dense woods and was cleared 2 summers ago. Some of the stumps are sending up new sprouts. The 'tree guy' who cleared the land said that most of the trees were sugar maple, with some red maple and silver maple mixed in. The difference is important to me because part of the land will be used for horse pasture and Red Maple is extremely toxic to horses, while sugar and silver maples are not. I've found numerous references for differentiating the species when full grown, but none so far that will help me tell the difference on these sprouts. Can someone provide me with some key differentiators for these sprouts, or suggest references that I might use? Thanks! ~B
