identify wild vine

    Please help me identify this wild vine. Description:
    new branches are bright green, one-half inch thick stalk, with large sharp thorns on either side of the stalk; older branches are darker in color with dark green berries and leaves that are turning red (in September); the vines attach themselves to my trees with small spiral shaped "cords"

    Hello,

    This is one of those cases where entering a more specific location than "USA" in your profile could be helpful to identifying the plant.

    I suspect that it is a Smilax species (commonly known as greenbriar or catbriar), though.
