Thanks for the quick reply and the ID; could this not be Laetiporus cincinnatus? See the article at http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/jul2001.html or is that splitting hairs. Is it true it is called 'chicken of the woods' because it "tastes like chicken"? Have you ever eaten one of these? Would anyone eat one of these?
They taste GREAT! They don't taste like chicken in any way that I could tell but each person has different taste buds? They've a rather stringy texture that some people aren't comfortable with...also know that some people dont' find it as good as I did....some get a tad of an allergic reaction to eating them. When I ate them...I added to pasta dinners with alfredo. The difference in them on site is that the sulfurous has the yellow underside(sulfur shelf)...the other has the white. But both are considered edible.
