I'm embarrassed to admit I can't ID this tree, though its name and normal range are practically staring me right in the face. It's a 25' tall, mature tree in the South Bay. The tree's location makes it difficult to get a good photo of the bark. The fruit varies in size; the largest are about two inches in diameter. Dozens litter the ground; those that have been crushed are bright orange inside. Can someone give me a clue? Thanks! -Sheepish Brad
Just so you are able to stand, that's the main thing. Strawberry tree is an important ornamental on the west coast, frequently offered by nurseries.
I thank all of you who chimed in and gave me the identification and information. (Just yesterday I had said to someone, "The fruit bears a slight resemblance to strawberries." Sheesh.) :^D
