I'm embarrassed to admit I can't ID this tree, though its name and normal range are practically staring me right in the face. It's a 25' tall, mature tree in the South Bay.

The tree's location makes it difficult to get a good photo of the bark. The fruit varies in size; the largest are about two inches in diameter. Dozens litter the ground; those that have been crushed are bright orange inside.

Can someone give me a clue? Thanks!

I'd say just plain Arbutus unedo - the flowers don't look particularly pink.

Just so you are able to stand, that's the main thing.

Strawberry tree is an important ornamental on the west coast, frequently offered by nurseries.

I thank all of you who chimed in and gave me the identification and information.

(Just yesterday I had said to someone, "The fruit bears a slight resemblance to strawberries." Sheesh.) :^D
