I'm new to conifers and bought this small, unlabeled pine (20") at a nursery. The person working there was unable to tell me what it was, but I liked it, so I bought it anyway. Can anyone help with identification? I need to know how big it will get before I plant it in the ground. Thanks very much.
It's one of the white pines; not enough detail visible in the pics to tell which. Are the new shoots pubescent (hairy/downy), or glabrous (hairless)? (you'll probably need a hand lens to tell). But even then, you may need to wait for it to produce cones before it is definitely identifiable. Whichever it is, it'll likely grow quite large, so give it plenty of space. Protect it from deer if you have them.
Michael, Thanks very much for your reply. The new shoots appear to be glabrous (with a hand lens) in bundles of five.
Ron, Thanks for your reply. The pine does remind me of pictures I've seen of Chinese white pines trained as bonsai.
