Identification: Identification of yellow flowering plant

    This plant may have come from Ecuadorean seed planted by a collector. It is not likely to be native to Puerto Rico where it is growing. It's about 4 feet tall on a single slim woody trunk so I don't know if it's a tree or shrub. The leaves are soft and the flowers smell like jasmine. Thanks for your help! This is my first post on this forum. You were recommended by the Palmtalk forum.

    Prestonia and Matalea are both close, but not quite it. Maybe check the Melastomataceae; I associate that type of leaf with that family.... I'll keep looking as well.

    Thanks for the idea! Someone who grows tropical trees suggested the gesneriad family?

    Could also be the Gesneriads, but I don't normally associate that type of flowers with them. Maybe the Apocynaceae? They're more in line with the flower structure and many members are notorious for smelling of jasmine....
