I have just received a bonsai tree as a gift but it has no label on the tree saying what kind of tree it is, I was hoping somebody may be able to help me identify it? Many thanks, Anthony.
Probably Juniperus procumbens 'Nana'. Definitely a juniper, anyway. Not a house plant. Like a living (as opposed to cut) Christmas tree can be displayed in ordinary room interiors for only a matter of days at a time before it may start becoming adversely affected. Outdoor conditions in Britain should be suitable most of the time. The main particular needs of hardy plants grown as bonsai are the result of them being trained and grown as a dwarfed, stylized specimen in a shallow or otherwise small container. Annual, skilled (informed) pruning of both the top and the roots are needed to retain the size and shape of the living sculpture. Potting mix may need annual refreshment, as with all potted plants some fertilization may also be called for. On a daily basis it is critical to keep on top of watering during dry conditions and protecting the roots during periods of penetrating, lingering frost.
