So, what I have is a new arbor on the east side of the house. It is fairly open area so during the growing season it is getting sun till about noon. What i'm looking for ( in decending order of preference ) is: fragrance for as long as possible, evergreen, and something that is a little different perhaps a little wow factor ( this is beside my front door). thanks for your time:)
I also live in Ocean Park. I have a Star Jasmine outside my front door and I've had it for more than a decade. It's evergreen and highly fragrant but I think it needs full sun (mine is against a south-facing wall). On the east side of my property, I have an evergreen Holboellia. It's vigorous and evergreen and I've read that its flowers are highly fragrant but the tiny flowers on mine are barely noticeable and completely lack fragrance. On the east side, I also have a new form of Camellia I've never seen before. I bought it this year at Art Knapp down the road. It's evergreen and it's a climber (you have to tie it to a trellis). I don't think it has fragrance though. My east side also has a lovely fragrant Wisteria vine, but it's not evergreen (and it would probably eat your front door unless you pruned and trained diligently). I have had some success with fragrant evergreen Clematis, and there are quite a few different varieties available these days. Not sure if they would be happy with such little sun though. I know a lady who lives fairly close by that has successfully grown yellow Jessamine. It's evergreen (though it loses some leaves in this area) and highly fragrant with bright yellow blossoms. It's not a usual plant for Canada, as I don't think it would survive a harsh winter here without protection. It would have the wow factor you're looking for and it doesn't need full sun. I hope some of that is helpful :)
anna thank you so much for your thoughtful responds. I never thought of the holboellia before but, I think I might just have to try my luck with the jessamine. thanks again!
