Is this tree a Japanese elm, Zelkova serrata? Particularly interested in the bark as I think the fascinating door panel might be from the same type of tree. My other guess is another Ulmaceae, Aphananthe aspera.

Rats, didn't realise the pics were sideways. Here's the door. Still sideways. They are upright in my albums...

Yes, photo of tree was taken in Tokyo 22 November, 2008. The door was in Kyoto. I apologise for the sideways photos. Could not get them to rotate. I thought it might be a zelkova because it was fan-shaped like our elms and it had an elm-like serrated leaf. Wrong guess?

Yes, that's Zelkova serrata. Don't know about the door panel though, no reason it should be; wood and bark are different products.

    Thanks, Michael,

Here are two shots of a similar tree's bark (north of Kyoto). The bark looks like it might flake off and leave interesting swirls and could possibly be rubbed down to eliminate the soft wood and highlight the harder wood. I wonder what other explanation would fit. The door looked natural not hand carved or wormeaten.

    The photos of the bark.
