Hello you all, I am new here, love these Japanese Maples and write from Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Not an expert, just an enthusiast :) and I joined this forum to read and learn more, but also to tap into expertise.........as I need to (well, I want to :) identify the variety of Japanese maples in my garden (previous owner planted some ten years odd back ?), and those available at my garden center to plant. "MISTERY" MAPLES at the GARDEN CENTER: I have found 2 Japanese maple trees (BOTH with small leaves BUT with different bark it seems....one rough, grey brown bark only, and the other a prominent green color with rougher areas), both standing about 6 foot above the pots they are in. Apparently they have not been labelled/labels were lost in transit from the supplier (?) as described by the nursery, so I am hoping to ID both of them as to decide which one to get (due to probable adult size, seasonal colors, spread etc). ALL of the pictures I grouped in this post here are of ONE of these two maple trees only ...... in the next post I will group all pictures of the SECOND tree. To follow........ Any opinions on what they are ? FYI, pictures were taken 26/09/2023 and most maples here are starting to turn to fall with very little to no leaves fallen. ANY IDEA what maple this is.....let's call this one MAPLE "A" in the attached pics ? (MAPLE "B" to follow soon) Thanks

I agree with Derek : Maple A looks like Sango kaku. The second one is more difficult to identify. Maybe Arakawa, the bark takes a few years to develop the cork-bark, but it might be another cultivar.
Katsura has small similar leaves with red new growth stems..but here is a few photos of my (green barked SK, rather than the red truck type)
Yes, that's right, and it shows how hard it is to "identify" a maple from photos. Any suggestion for B ? Je sèche... - colloq. for "I can't find the answer", GGle translate : "I dry...". IA is stoopid... ;0)
Agree with R @dicky5ash 'B' could well be Katsura. but as Alain said," it's so hard to ID from photos" and with thousands of cultivars out there all so similar, Sooo very easy to get it wrong.
Just to clarify - I was saying A could be Katsura (not B).but SK is also a possibility for A .Katsura leaves are smaller than SK..and the summer colour of Katsura is a pale yellow, whereas the SK is a pale green. I have two SKs 2m+ with distinctly red smooth bark on the trunk..and another that has the same leaves but with a Green colour trunk. Both have red new growth stems and red petioles. Another differentiator is that Katsura is the first to push out leaves in the Spring in my garden..earlier than SK (but this won’t help you right now!) B is definitely not Sango kaku or Katsura in my opinion - neither of these have bark on the trunk like that. I agree with @AlainK B is possibly Arakawa.. I’ve never seen one of these for sale in the UK..I’d snap that one up if I was in your shoes!
Your totally right R. B is not Katsura, but I think that A is Sango kaku. Alain's thoughts on B is a strong possibility. Not thinking strait atm. Still very angry on the Sycamore gap situation tbh.
ps: I didn't understand the sycamore gap situation you mentioned.....but news reached this side of the Atlantic (well, we're far away, on the Pacific actually) some hours later and I feel so bad for communities losing natural icons like that, in those circumstances, quite incomprehensible ! nuff said
