Hi all I am trying to identify a perenial growing in my garden. I started from seed last year. Currently the plant is 4.5 ft tall and may reach 6 ft. It is near a fence and crowded so height is forced a bit Photos attached: The flower is 2.5 " across with four petals and long stamens It's also wilted - pardon me please The top has multiple flower pods They split open leaving the 4 green parts hanging below the flower The flowers open in morning full sun The stem has rough dark colored hairs or barbs I have searched all the books I have and am unable to find anything close. Your help will be appreciated
Showy evening primrose (Oenothera glazioviana), a cosmopolitan weed. It dies after flowering. The reddish hairs visible in your middle picture are diagnostic for this species.
I agree that it is Oenothera Common name seems to be Yellow Evening Primrose I was wrong on first post - flowers open in the evening
>Common name seems to be Yellow Evening Primrose< Not really. Others are prevalent for this one in particular. Search using botanical name I provided, as a phrase. Google, for instance, has pages and pages on this common plant, frequently asked about on garden forums. "Put into European commerce in 1860, this is a hybrid of uncertain origin--most likely E. elata ssp. Hookeri x E. biennis. Some say it was introduced from Texas to England via seeds in 1858. It is Seattle's most common EVENING-PRIMROSE, both in gardens and wild" - Jacobson, Wild Plants of Greater Seattle
