This plant is growing every year in a small wetland area near North Battleford, SK. I have no idea what it is. These photos were taken from Mar 18, 2012 through May 4, 2012 to show its growth and then disappearance. It lurks under the water the rest of the year and rises to the surface come spring breakup. WHAT is it???? Thanks for your help, Andrea
Thank you for the reply! The plant you suggested seems to have very distinct leaves and branches, so I am not sure we have it identified. Andrea
Elodea canadensis, maybe? I've never seen it do the whole floating-mat and then submerged-mat thing, but that's not out of the realm of possibility for it....
Here are 2 close-ups (the best I can do for the distance I was shooting from) of the plants floating in the water. IF they emerge again, I shall try to get MUCH closer. We still have WINTER here in Battleford, SK. Thanks, Andrea
I found 2 more photos to crop to help show its growth. Andrea It amazes me how these floating plants grow. While waterfowl don't nest in this small marsh, lots of snipes rest snuggled into the plants. This is the only marsh I have seen this plant grow in thus far.
Still, not too much seen. Check if Hydrilla verticillata fits. Like Elodea it is also from Hydrocharitaceae family.
