When you write the west coast, I assume you mean within 400m or so of the ocean coastline? This is a young Polypodium scouleri.
Thank You Daniel, It's very kind of you. Yes I took the picture at the Wild Pacific Trail along the coastline. Actually I have been looking for the name of the plant among the Aroids - what a mistake.
