Hey everyone, been doing a spot of gardening this evening and keep on coming across little seedlings of this plant, as far as I know we don't have a 'parent' plant in our garden so I 'm not sure where it came from! Can anyone tell me what it is so I can re-site the ones I've found to somewhere more suitable if necessary? The leaves have furry edges as well in case you can't see from the photo (I took it on my phone!) Thanks a lot Jen
After doing a bit of research I think it might be C.pannosus (Also known as C.buxifolius) with common name Silverleaf Cotoneaster as it fits the description/pictures and also according to wikipedia the fruit is very attractive to birds and they are the main agents of seed dispersal, which explains how it got into my garden! Here are some google pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotoproze/2840503449/ http://phasmatania.co.uk/starr_010717_0056_cotoneaster_pannosus_1_.jpg I have two quick questions....I read this plant is a noxious weed in Hawaii and California but does anyone know how invasive it would be in England? Also since this seedling has probably popped up this year am I likely to get any berries come fall? Thanks Jen
Various cotoneasters produce self-sown seedlings in Britain, but rarely in numbers sufficient to be considered invasive weeds. The commonest self-seeder I see around here (Northumbs) is Cotoneaster frigidus. Yours is still too young to flower and fruit - could be another 5-10 years before it does.
really? Wow, well in that case I probably ought to find it somewhere its going to like so it can sit it out! Thanks for your help:)
