Does anyone know what this is? I didn't plant it, and don't know where it came from but there it is, in the garden. That 5 pointed green star in the center should make it easy to identify but I haven't seen this flower before. It looks vaguely like a hollyhock, but I know it isn't.

Looks like gaps between the petals, showing through to the sepals behind. I'd agree with it being a species of Malva.

The leaves don't resemble malvas I've seen. Could it be a rose of sharon seedling?

Nope, definitely not Hibiscus. I've been raising quite a few of them from seed and they look quite different. Also, that seed pod is completely different. Given the responses I've gotten so far, I'm going to go have a closer look at it a little later today and address a few of the observations made so far.

Thanks again Ron. At least it in Malvaceae. Never come across Malope trifida before. The green really is on the petals! That is my new plant for today.

Armed with my new knowledge of what that plant was, I had a really close look at the flower this morning. In fact, that green "star" which looks so much like green colour on the petals is, in fact, the green of the sepals showing through, between the petals. But it is such a bright, fresh green colour, it looks very nice. I've recovered some seeds and will plant them next year - I just hope it doesn't turn out to be as eager a self seeder as Malva and Lavatera are.
