I bought a plant at the supermarket a couple of months ago that came labeled as a 'houseplant' with no other information. Over the course of the time it's been here, my other half has probably overwatered it horribly (getting him not to put two inches of water in the container it is sat in is apparently beyond his capabilities!), combined with leaving it unattended for two weeks while on vacation (left sat in water again - not sure what he has against the poor plant!).

Came back, and it looked distinctly dead. He's pulled off all the leaves (because he found a help-site on the web that told him to do that), but it isn't improving, and chances are, actually has perished.

That said, I was wondering if anyone could ID it, as I'd love to get another one (even if I have to keep it behind locked doors away from him!), but have absolutely no clue about what it is. I've tried a few sensible google image searches, and the closest I found was a type of clover, but the picture didn't look terribly similar (just a similar colour).

The purple 'fluffy' parts were standing straight upwards, and were a little more purple than pink (they are turning paler and whiter in 'death'), and of course it had more leaves.

Not sure if you prefer attachments or links, so I've provided both. Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions.

Looks like Celosia spicata, but that is a garden annual.

Having typed 'Celosia spicata' into google images, I found this picture which is definitely (or at least, to me, looks the spitting image of) the plant in question. Suggests it is a 'Celosia caracas', but definitely a garden plant as you said - goes to show how well labeled plants are that are sold in the supermarket!

I do like the look, so now on the hunt for some more (and a sensible guide on how to keep them for the terminally inept with plantlife :) ) for next year for plant pots on the patio.

Thank you very much for your help - should have asked here hours ago rather than roaming google with 'purple fluffy flower house plant' in my search bar!
