I took over a spot in the community garden about a month ago and after weeding for hours found some plants that needed some tlc. There were these 3 plants which to me looked like green beans. They were only about 3 inches tall and now they are almost 2 feet tall. I noticed the orange flowers a week or so ago and thought I might have some beans soon. Now I see there are these strange pod like things where the flowers were and they are definately not beans. By the way, the leaves are sooo soft, like velvet. Does anybody know what this is? Sorry for the bad quality photos but I only had my phone at the moment. Thanks everybody! :)
I think I found it. It must be a velvetleaf. Some people are saying it's a weed. I'm guessing it doesn't produce any fruit. Any info anybody has is most welcome.
Yes, velvetleaf, Abutilon theophrasti. The plant's fruit is nicely captured in your first photo. This is an invasive weed and an agricultural pest.
Abutilon theophrasti. No fruits, just the seed pod that you have in your 1st pic. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=A...g&biw=1184&bih=594&sei=z3dGUNHID6Wx0QXPzIDgDw http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abutilon_theophrasti
That's too bad :( It's lovely! The flowers are a very bright orange and the seed pods are so odd looking. Plus the soft leaves are nice to touch. I wonder how it got here. I've lived in Wisconsin all my life and I've never seen it. Of course I just started gardening this year so that could be why. Thanks
