    Hi,
I don't know much about trees, only what I like and plant. I do fertilize and water when necessary. I have two fancy leaf japanese red maples, one in my front yard which is doing great. The one in my back yard has alot of dead branches and the leaves that are coming out are small and wilting. Does anyone have any idea whats wrong and what I can do to correct the situation? I live in Virginia and we had a normal winter but the month of March was very dry. I appreciate any help I can be given. Thank you.

What's different in the back - soil? Amount of sun exposure (J. maples prefer light shade to full sun), available water?

We have virginia red clay but I heavily mulched, It was very dry in March, the driest on record and I didn't water. The tree has been there for about 8 years. It has always done well. Last year we put a canapy over our patio which the tree is next to. I am planning on moving the canapy back, in case that has hurt the tree, even though last year the tree looked fine with the canapy. Thank for your help.
