Can anyone help? I live in the UK and there don't seem to be any termite treatments that can be bought off the shelf. I didn't even know we had them here! I have tiny orange 'ants' pushing up filtered soil in my grandparents lawn, and I have noticed that a number of the plants have just fizzled away this year - they are either completely baron (started trying to sprout leaves then dwindled) or, like the plum tree, some branches have completely dried out and the others are looking very worse for wear - and all the plums are falling off. I am desperate. This garden is actually my grandparents and its their one small pleasure - they are not very mobile and look forward to the fruit on the plum and pear that I planted for them every year - and their beautiful scented heritage rose bushes are dying as well.

We noticed that a neighbours' cooking apple tree fell down last year and has been left to rot there, thats why I suspect we could have a huge termite problem on our hands, which must already be dangerously close to the house. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Am I going to need to get someone in?

It's probably the best course when you've got an infestation that big - they may be ants or termites, but the bottom line is they're killing your garden and that needs to be stopped. A pest-control professional will know a) what they are and b) exactly what to do to make them go away.
