Your tree may be suffering from root rot. The little flies are likely fungus gnats which thrive in overly moist soil.

A pot is the right size if there is some space, perhaps an inch or two, between its side and the rootball. Using a container much larger than the rootball is a mistake as that results in uneven soil moisture and discourages root growth into the wetter regions. The soil itself should have ingredients such as perlite to increase its porosity. Also reduced moisture levels will discourage fungus gnats which feed on organic material including roots. I'm not familiar with the particular requirements for this particular plant; hopefully someone can offer more help in that regard.
