I spent quite some time trying to find this one on Google and Google Images as well as several identification sites. Someone referred to the same plant as a Harebell, but when I double checked by searching the name none of the results matched my picture. The flowers in the area I was in were not bell like but instead skyward facing and flat. I was exploring a wetland area in central Massachusetts.
Looks like G. maculatum, a species grown in gardens. I have grown it myself. Use some serious descriptions to check that name, such as in a manual of plants native to your region.
Geranium maculatum, Wild Geranium. A very common woodland wildflower here in the east. There are a lot of other wild geraniums but most have much smaller and less flat-faced flowers. Geranium maculatum. The link is to the Connecticut Botanical Society wild flower website - a good place to check your IDs. (If it's in CT, it's probably in MA too.)
