Hi, I just registered here. I've been trying to identify this plant, unfortunately the shop owner doesn't even know what it is. I love it - The flowers open late in the morning. I hope the photos show enough detail to help identification. I live in Greece - perhaps it is a Mediterranean plant. We don't have heavy winters every year but it does get cold and I'm concerned about protecting it throughout the winter. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. I don't see the photos here, I hope they appear when I submit this...
I am new at this identifying thing, but the top picture looks similar to 'Portulaca' and the they both have similaraties to the Purslane family?
Well a new twist on this plant =). When I read that Portulaca oleracea is edible I went to my mother-in-law who knows about wild greens. It seems that this is a plant that is well known in Greece. It is used in salads (although more in the past, not so much now). It's called Glystrida or Andrakla in Greek. Old wive's tales say that when someone talks a lot they've eaten glystrida!
Hello, It was a quess on my part. I bought a couple plants at a nursery a few years back and it was portulaca, but I had never seen that particular form. They were selling it for hanging baskets. It was supposed to trail and it had the double flower and grew close to the ground. Quite nice, but not the same form that I have grown here in the summer. We have had one growing at work on the ground and it dies back in the winter months and comes back in spring. Not sure if it is coming back from roots or seed. I know that we have found it in other plants the following spring, it must reseed freely. I do not remember seeing much of a flower on it though. Anyhow, this is the part about gardening that I enjoy so much. Always a learning experience for me.
