I planted some elfin thyme this summer. I planted it in sand and it has grown reasonably well but this fungus (see attached pictures) has somehow found its way into the sand and the thyme. I have physically dug it all out, added new sand and it is starting to resurface.

Could anyone please tell what it is and what I should do to get rid of it?

Thanks for any help! I originally posted this on the pest forum - opps :(

Looks like a liverwort, which is a plant (possibly the mother of all land plants prehistorically).
    Maybe Marchantia?
    cheers,

Definately looks like Liverwart....even the male of the two? It definately appreciates moisture as more often then not I find it growing along creeks.

I think if you repost the question in one of the gardening forums on this site, you may get some help: I hear this sort of liverwort is not uncommon in gardens/nurseries, and is often not loved, so there may be remedies they know of.

You can search the forums for liverwort - I think the topic has come up before.

Thanks everyone for the help. Daniel, I searched the forum as you suggested and got some good info. I'll try some of the suggestions and hopefully get rid of the pesty stuff!
