Hi my name is Dale and this is my first post. My Husband (now deceased) and I planted a beautiful japanese "garnet" maple before we got married, 18+ years ago. My neighbors huge limb fell on top of it and it is GONE! It was my most treasured tree. It was about 10 ' T X 10+'around. It cascaded over the edge of my wall, leaning towards the Sacramento River. I talk and think about it and I literally get sick to my stomach. My problem is that I can't seem to get anyone to help me find a replacement cost for my insurance company. We paid $160.00 18+ years ago. I live in California near Sacramento. Any ideas of cost or who to contact? I have tried Landscape Architects, Nursery's, on-line, etc.. NO ONE has responded to my emails, phone calls, etc. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to this wonderful site.

I would suggest you try hiring a consulting arborist to give you a report and valuation for the tree. If you want to get a ballpark price yourself, go to a nursery, fond a tree that is as close in size to the one you had, get a landscaper to give you a quote to install it and there you go. I do up a few quotes a year for ICBC (car insurance conglomerate) claims and they want to see a scope of work with a bottom line price. If the plants are not a reasonably attainable size they will mostly go with the largest available and call it done.

try the ISA website: www.isa-arbor.com and go to find an arborist, that will give you a list of some people to call in your area.

For what its worth, I am surprised your insurance company didn't give you a course of action to follow for a claim, have they never replaced a tree before?
