First of thank you for your help. Below is what I'm putting on. as directed. I also live in IL, US and they are under a grow light. Want to grow better citrus without all the hassle of regular feedings? Introducing Super Citrus Tablets from the Lutz Corporation -- the once-a-year citrus food! Using them is easy. Just place the tablets in the root zone area of your plant and water as usual. Each tablet has a guaranteed 8-4-8 analysis and contains additional elements required for beautiful lush citrus trees, plus elemental sulfur to assist in the uptake of these elements. Special binders safely release the elements over time. And Super Citrus Tablets don't wash away like surface fertilizers! I'm also using the Aqua bottle. that watering glass bulb that waters its self..
First, I don't think the tree is having any sort of problem. The leaves that are yellowing are older leaves, and it can be seen that the tree is removing the nitrogen from them before the leaves are discarded. The life span of a citrus leaf is 18-22 months. HOWEVER, there are three items that I would not recommend. 1. Lutz Tablets. Generally tablets are not the best method of fertilizing. Citrus are heavy feeders, and the 8-4-8 formula over a year's time is underfeeding the tree. Locate a water soluble fertilizer with a nutrient ratio (not nutrient formula) as close to 5-1-3 as you can locate. Be POSITIVE any fertilizer you select contains trace minerals. Most fertilizers do not contain the element magnesium (Mg), therefore you will need to add Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salts) at the rate of 1 teaspoon/gallon WARM water once every three months. 2. The Aqua bottle is going to cause you future trouble. Further you did not ask about the growth medium that the tree is growing in. If the medium is not rapid draining, contains high air porosity the expected life spay of your tree will be about two years or less. At least 50 percent of the medium should be blended with 1/4 to 1/2 inch coarse chunky material such as bark or coconut husk.
Well thank you very much. I'll stop using the tablets i have and go and get what you sugguest. Will check out the medium. Will let you know saturday its down in the basement that is where I have the trees at under the growth lights. thank you again. barb
Dear Mullet, Schultz-Premium Potting Soil Plus. I was told by the company that sold me the fertiliser. Miracle Grow would kill the trees. It seem to be doing ok . Then I started to use the Schultz. I read that you don't really like the Product Schultz. So how do I buy and use the right one. Thank you very much for all your help
You are going to have to make your own medium. Two good medium formulas for container citrus trees are: 1. 4 parts 1/4 or 1/2 inch Coconut Husks (CHC) to 1 part peat moss. (You can also make a 50/50 blend of the two sizes of CHC and then mix the blend with the peat moss) 2. 3 parts small pine bark, 1 part COARSE sand and 1 part peat moss. (This the the most common medium used by commercial nurseries) The above two mixes are not the only good mediums possible. The IMPORTANT thing is to make a fast draining, highly air porous medium. In the search function on this forum type in the following words (one at a time): CHC, growth medium, draining, and you will get a lot of good information. - Millet
Thank you very much. I'll let my green thumb mom put this together she will know how to pull it all. I am so happy I found this website..
