Can anyone help me with my sick catalpa? It has always been a bit of a sticky mess around the time it flowers but this year it is covering everything around it with some kind of nectar or sap that coats everything. The substance is water soluble and has a slight odour when washed off. I have a Japanese maple about 20 ft. away that is getting sprayed too and seems to be suffering with leaves that are drying up. In addition, the neighbours don't seem too happy about their car being covered in this goo. Any ideas as to what the problem is and how to cure it?

Thanks ever so much -- it certainly seems to describe my problem and would also explain why another neighbour has the same problem with a different tree. I really appreciate the help.
