I live in Gravedona which is located at the North end of Lake Como. The flowers in the attached photo appear in February/March - I have been told they are orchids and protected but no one knows their exact name. Would appreciate identification.

    many thanks.

Sister to Iris subgenus Hermodactyloides (excluding I. kolpakowskiana) in recently published plastid DNA studies.(Subgeneric classification in Iris re-examined using chloroplast sequence data, Wilson, Carol A., Taxon, Volume 60, Number 1, February 2011 , pp. 27-35(9))

Notice the resemblance of the flower structure to other irises. Orchids are different.
