This plant outside a downtown apartment building, with the almost black stems, looks so attractive right now without flowers getting in the way! It might be Hydrangea macrophylla 'Nigra'. Distinguishing features of this cultivar are supposed to be "its dark purple to black stems and petioles, and its deep red pedicels and peduncles" - Hydrangea macrophylla Nigra.
