Opinions: how would maples do as understory trees below alders?

    Re: Planting a Maple

Here the red alders are short lived , 40-50 years, compared to maples and weedy.

Weedy alders colonize bare ground and build up the soil. In moist places here vine maples grow natively beneath red alder trees.

Alders do tend to cast a heavy shade when they grow in dense stands, so maples may suffer from low light problems (poor fall color, slow growth)

Another concern may be the alders falling on the maples in future years. May be good to allow space for any alders to be fallen without damaging the maples.
