I have just come into a fully landscaped yard with issues that confound my knowledge. There is a beautiful Magnolia tree shrub in the front that appeared last year in a continuous line with a bordering thorny hedge. The hedge had growen into the Magnolia so I decided to part the two by trimming the hedge. Now it is evident that the magnolia was trainned to grow in a U shape, The trunk is thick and bends at about 4 feet. The front growth is thick and heavy with many crossing new shoots. I think it needs to be trimmed back to prevent breakage at the bend? How do I go about this without destroying it? Thank-you.
