    Hi
I have just cut down a mid size tree in my yard )-: it was leaning into the house and was dangerous. In the middle of a beautiful bed that needs lots of clean up and new plants or cedars.

Problem. no privacy between the neighbours any more and they helped me cut the tree down. I have great neighbours

How do I kill the stump and still plant.

What if I put down plastic (dark black) put a barrel overtop ( I have a whole cedar barrel) and big pot of plants on top.

Could I plant around it then?

Or will the fir tree send up shoots? I am at Crescent Beach area..
    Help...

    Chemicals???
No mulch it will just become fertilizer I think..

This is an excerpt from Skills for Simple Living by Betty Tillotson
Stumps rot away in 1 1/2 years if kept covered with your wood ashes. The stump should be cut close to the ground so that it gets a lot of moisture. Ashes and water mix to create caustic soda, a powerful alkali. Don't add acid to hurry the process, or you will neutralize the alkali.
Hope this helps. It's a fabulous book

Keep breaking any new growth off and it will rot. Even our hardwood Eucalypts start going in a couple of years. If it is a bit high place a pot of trailing stuff and plant the rest up.

No its in the corner of our yard near the fence line. I am thinking of putting some black plastic down over it and then the barrel with a plant.

I need a to plant something near there..our between the two houses we have no privacy any more. I need a fast growing tree. Maybe a smoke bush?

Why the plastic?? It will rot better if left to the elements. Re tree sorry can't advise your climate is different to here. But you might give a fast growing hedge plant suitable for yr area a go. Even a suitable vine on a wire might work. Then a new tree can take it's time

    Hi

I do not want plant a tree other than cedar hedging

No sorry I am in Oz but the others will be along with more local ideas. I personaly use bannana passion fruit, passion fruit, potato vine [Solanum jasminoides] and climbing geraniums. There is wisteria up the house acting as a flat tree to shade balconies. All these grow with gay abandon all year so if you need privacy you need one for your climate. I also have a fast growing ornamental grape vine that turns scarlet in autumn. It is currently heading off down the paddock fence. Should look really good in a couple of weeks if the goats don't get it. Autumn is on the way.

    Where is Oz?

I like the idea of grape! It is a partial sun/shade area about half and half
