Hi I would like to know the best way to grow Rosemary - as I use it often in my cooking and buy it fresh from my green grocer. is it best in a pot ? does it need much attention?
Depending on where in Australia you are, it will probably do better outside in the ground. Rosemary will probably do better for you with a little neglect. Often killed by too rich a soil, too moist an environment and too much attention. If you are in very tropical moist heat area (Is that just your northwest or all of the northern coast?) you might want to use a pot and keep it in shifting shade. It loves sun, but I find my subtropical sun and high humidity is a bit much for it, so mine is in a pot and up against a few shrubs from some intermittent shade. If you get frosts, you'll want to protect it by tenting and mulching. I had a few frosts last winter but my potted rosemary of seven or eight years did just fine with no real protection. Rosemary likes alkaline soil, too.
Thank you for your information- We live 30klm north of Sydney and do get very hot wether in Spring and summer, not too cold winters. I will give it a try regards Cheryl
