Hi - I bought and replanted a ponytail palm that seems to be thriving but not sure what to do now. It started growing a new stem from the center/top and I'm not sure I can cut this off and if I do, whether: 1) it can be replanted, and 2) if it will hurt the plant. Can anyone give me some advice?
The new growth appears to be a flower stem. (See this post in Ponytail Palms and other Beaucarnea/Nolina species | UBC Botanical Garden Forums.) This may be of interest: Ponytail Tree - Should I remove dead flower after it's finished flowering? | UBC Botanical Garden Forums
Thank you! Do you know if the flower stem can be removed before it dries up and if it can be replanted? And where do I cut it off?
I've not done it before but I don't see how it would be harmful to remove the flower stem. Past postings suggest it would be difficult to root a leaf stem cutting; it is unlikely there'll be success with a flower stem. I remember reading in past postings that branching occurs after flowering so I would allow the plant to flower and see what happens.
